Mark Sanchez discusses Aaron Rodgers being potential Jets savior

Retired quarterback Mark Sanchez knows a little bit about the hype hovering over Aaron Rodgers this summer. The four-time NFL Most Valuable Player is expected to serve as a franchise savior for the New York Jets.

"I think if anybody is ready to do it and has the energy, just the drive, you can tell when you talk to him, you can hear it in his voice, you can see it," Sanchez said about Rodgers during a chat with Brian Costello of the New York Post. "He’s got a hop in his step. He looks, feels, sounds good. That’s a dangerous dude with the ball in his hands, especially when he’s locked in like that. Even on his worst day, he can still kick your a--. Catch him on his best day, good God, that’s a problem."

Costello noted that Sanchez and Rodgers have known each other "for years" and share an agent. That, of course, is not all that the two have in common.

Sanchez joined the Jets as the fifth overall pick of the 2009 NFL Draft and came closer than any signal-caller after him to guiding the club back to its first Super Bowl since Joe Namath made good on his Super Bowl III guarantee. Before Sanchez became known for an infamous "butt fumble," he helped the Jets play in back-to-back conference championship games.

During his conversation with Costello, Sanchez compared being the Jets starting quarterback to fishing.

"There’s two different types of fishing — catching and waiting," Sanchez explained. "You’re either winning or losing in New York. They are two very different experiences, just like fishing. You’re catching fish, you’re excited, things are going well. When you’re just sitting around waiting, 'It’s hot. I’m getting sunburnt out here. This is rough.' It’s very similar, in my opinion, because the losses feel heavier and the wins feel greater."

One way or another, Rodgers will better understand Sanchez's take shortly after the Jets close Week 1 of the regular season with a "Monday Night Football" matchup versus the Buffalo Bills. As of Wednesday afternoon, OddsChecker listed the Bills as the favorites (-138, -2.5) to win that game.

Sanchez believes Rodgers hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy as a Jets player would mean more than when the future Hall of Famer did so with the Green Bay Packers.

"...He’s in the biggest market," Sanchez added about Rodgers. "There is no doubt that would be the biggest thing since Namath."

On Wednesday, OddsChecker had the Jets tied for seventh among the overall favorites at +1800 odds to win Super Bowl LVIII.
