Cowboys 'Bold' Hire of Belichick? Rival Did More Than Talk About It
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

As has been the case far too often already in this Dallas Cowboys offseason, Jerry Jones and company have talked the talk ... while one of "America's Team's'' chief rivals actually walked the walk.

Remember when Bill Belichick - after his "parting of ways'' with the New England Patriots - was the subject of an apropos-of-nothing Jones announcement regarding Jerry's willingness to work with with the legendary coach?

"I know him personally and I like him,” Jones said recently. “There’s no doubt in my mind we could work together. None. None.”

Great. But ... While Jerry was talking about it ... the San Francisco 49ers were actually trying to do it.

According to Mike Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle, the 49ers called Belichick about their open defensive coordinator position earlier this offseason.

The Niners followed up their Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs by promoting from within, elevating assistant Nick Sorenson to the defensive coordinator role when Steve Wilks was fired by head coach Kyle Shanahan. ... who spoke wistfully a few years ago about the idea of adding Belichick to his staff.

"I mean, if Bill Belichick became available two weeks from now and said he wants to come here, and I was told I had to let someone go to bring him in, that would probably be a smart decision to do that," Shanahan said after the 2018 season.

Obviously, Belichick didn't want to do that. And the Niners know it because they called him. And now the big-talk Cowboys know it, too. ... assuming they are reading this story about the Niners having actually tried to do a deal.
