NBA Coach Has Brutal Assessment of Dallas Mavericks Luka Doncic
Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic is one of the best players currently in the NBA. A perennial MVP candidate, the franchise has built its entire game plan around him, hoping he can lead them to the promised land.

All of the decisions they make with their roster are based on how the players will fit around Luka Doncic. The Dallas Mavericks made huge improvements at the trade deadline, landing Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington to upgrade their frontcourt.

Both are good fits around Doncic. Washington is a versatile big man, capable of playing power forward or center. He provides 3-point shooting, which is ideal around Doncic. Gafford is a lob threat, providing spacing in another form.

As one of the most ball-dominant players in the NBA, all eyes are on Luka Doncic when he is on the court. The entire offense flows through him, which makes sense to some degree; you want the ball in your best player’s hands as much as possible.

However, that does lead to some issues with continuity and flow at times. An anonymous veteran assistant coach commented on the Mavericks’ style of play, saying his teammates breathe a sigh of relief when he exits the game because it allows them to get into a flow of their own.

“It’s a sense of, ‘Hey, now we get to play.’ It’s difficult to have any rhythm if you’re not touching the ball,” the coach said, via The Ringer.

That kind of system does have its perks. To find success in the NBA Playoffs, when games normally slow down, you need players who can create offense not only for themselves but their teammates.

Luka Doncic is certainly capable of that, as he is an incredible playmaker. But, the Dallas Mavericks can go through stretches where their offense gets stagnant and unproductive. Finding that happy medium is what will determine how far they can advance in the 2024 NBA Playoffs.
